GB starts Vendor Engagement for Smart Metering Solutions in Difficult Buildings
Energy suppliers in Great Britain have announced the first stage of vendor engagement for the design and delivery of a specialised type of smart metering solutions. The new technology will be tasked with addressing 3.5% of buildings where the currently planned smart metering solutions are likely to be difficult to deploy due to device to device communication restrictions. This is part of the programme to install smart electricity and gas meters to all residential and small business customers in GB by the end of 2020.
A vendor engagement event is being planned at the end of August in London to begin the process of identifying potential vendors capable of formulating and producing technology solutions as a precursor to a formal procurement process.
Colin Sausman, Chair, said “the Alt HAN Company is excited to commence on this journey with vendors, exploring ways to extend the full benefits of smart metering to as many premises as possible”.
Energy suppliers have established a special delivery vehicle, Alt HAN Co, to manage the solution delivery and Alt HAN Co has appointed Gemserv to procure services and Baringa Partners to provide design requirements on their behalf.
David Thorne, Chief Executive of Gemserv, said “the Alt HAN Technology Services procurement is an exemplar opportunity to pursue our core purpose to make complex markets work for everyone’s benefit. With this project we passionately believe that we can be at the heart of realising the environmental and economic benefits to GB consumers and businesses”.
“Having been involved in the UK smart meter programme from the outset, we’re excited to continue working with GB energy suppliers and Alt HAN Co to overcome their most complex installs” commented Anya Davis, Partner at Baringa Partners.
The launch of the Technology services procurement will commence with a Vendor Engagement event on 30th August to inform vendors of the scope of services, timescales and approach. The event will also allow vendors to ask questions and provide feedback to the Alt HAN Company.
